The latest WordPress 3.3 includes a fix that removes the performance problems related to using just /%postname%/ as your permalink structure without any prefixing dates/numbers. According to Joost de Valk, using dates in URL’s can result in poor click-through-rate, so I thought I’d go ahead and make the switch.
Check out the instructions on Joost’s blog. He also has a nifty tool for generating the necessary .htaccess redirects.

I never realised there was a performance penalty with pretty permalinks. I guess my blogs were never that big. Good to know that there will be no concern anymore.
I also never saw the new “post name” option in address structure. But no worries, the upgrade procedure has set it appropriately already. Cool.
Daniel, what are you using to generate the opt-in checkboxes in the comment form?

Pekka, it took a while to answer, sorry… The checkboxes and accompanying notifications are provided by the Jetpack plugin (by Automattic).

Daniel, this is a very good point and I have first-hand experience on this. After removing dates on the permalink, my traffic gradually improved. I don’t know what’s with dates and numbers on permalinks, but it sure do look cluttered. The generanl rule now is the shorter the permalink is, the better it is for SEO.
